Headaches Getting Relief Naturally
By Gene Marcotte
Headaches are one of the most common ailments of our time. There are a multitude of causes of headaches, many associated with external or environmental issues endemic to our stressed, fast paced life styles. These external triggers cause the muscles in the neck, shoulder and scalp to constrict which irritates the nerve endings and causes the pain associated with headaches. These external triggers include food allergies, pollutants, chemical intolerances, overindulgence and stress.
Headaches can range in severity from mildly annoying to completely incapacitating. Anyone who regularly suffers from even moderate headaches can bear witness to how disruptive and demoralising headaches can be. Most sufferers need relief quickly and usually turn to standard medication solutions such as ibuprofen, aspirin, codeine and paracetemol for that relief. Although one or more of these will usually be pretty effective in relieving the pain of headaches, the relief often comes at an unacceptably high cost. Long term use of these medicines can lead to drug resistance and increased headache frequency or severity. Analgesic cocktails containing codeine can also become highly addictive.
Fortunately for those interested in combating headaches naturally there are many proven herbal remedies for headache relief. These include:
Feverfew and Ginkgo: These offer relief from migraines and vascular headaches. Feverfew leaves contain parthenolide which is a naturally occurring anti-inflammatory.
Ginger: Ginger is a true all rounder of natural cures. It causes the production of natural opiates in the brain and relaxes blood vessels in the head and reduces swelling.
Chamomile: Calming and soothing properties
Cinnamon: Relaxes tight muscles and is a great stress reducer.
Lavender: Sublime relaxation inducer and natural pain reliever.
Lime essence: Anxiety reduction.
Marjoram: Muscle relaxer.
Peppermint: Pain and tension reduction
Valerian: Pain and tension reduction
Rosemary: Rosemary tea is a good pain reliever.
In addition to these natural remedies headache sufferers should also try and reduce or eliminate a couple of well known catalysts for headaches to try and alleviate the problem. These include dairy products, chocolate, chicken, liver, alcohol and strong chesses. Other common causes to investigate are eye strain, high blood pressure and low blood sugar levels.
Although not generally considered to be life threatening conditions, headaches should never be taken lightly, particularly when they are recurring or last for more than a day or so. If these conditions are present, a doctor should be consulted immediately.
Effective headache relief has become one of our times most sought after cures. Although conventional medicine will always have an important role to play, it is reassuring to know that there are also natural remedies that can offer relief from the scourge of headache pain.
